چکیده
Two neonates who developed Candida albicans skin abscesses are described. One developed disseminated infection. In the newborn abscesses cannot be assumed to be of bacterial origin.

Profiling of Candida albicans gene expression during intra-abdominal candidiasis identifies biologic processes involved in pathogenesis.
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of intra-abdominal candidiasis is poorly understood. METHODS Mice were intraperitoneally infected with Candida albicans (1 × 10(6) colony-forming units) and sterile stool. nanoString assays were used to quantitate messenger RNA for 145 C. albicans genes within the peritoneal cavity at 48 hours. RESULTS Within 6 hours after infection, mice developed peritonitis, c...
متن کاملConcurrent subcutaneous candidal abscesses and pulmonary cryptococcosis in a patient with diabetes mellitus and a history of corticosteroid therapy.
A 50-year-old man with a history of long-term corticosteroid treatment following adrenalectomy for Cushing's syndrome and uncontrolled diabetes mellitus was admitted for an examination of an abnormal thoracic shadow. Cryptococcal serum antigens were positive, and the histopathology of a lung biopsy showed encapsulated yeast resembling Cryptococcus neoformans. On admission, the serum β-D-glucan ...
متن کاملTreatment of intra-abdominal abscesses caused by Candida albicans with antifungal agents and recombinant murine granulocyte colony-stimulating factor.
The aim of the present study was to assess the influence of immunomodulation of host defense with recombinant murine granulocyte colony-stimulating factor (rmG-CSF) on intra-abdominal abscesses caused by Candida albicans. Mice received prophylaxis or therapy with 1 microg of rmG-CSF/day in the presence or absence of antifungal treatment consisting of amphotericin B (0.75 mg/kg of body weight/da...
متن کاملThe Pathogenesis of Candida Infections in a Human Skin Model: Scanning Electron Microscope Observations
Cutaneous candidiasis is an opportunistic infection that arises, in most cases, from endogenous, saprophytic candidal blastospores that selectively colonize oral, gastrointestinal, vaginal, and cutaneous epithelium. Candida albicans has been regarded as the most common causative agent in human fungal infections. However, other Candida species have become a significant cause of infection. Scanni...
متن کاملCandida albicans as the Sole Organism Cultured from a Perirectal Abscess
Perirectal abscess is a common colorectal condition that may be present with or without a fistula. In most cases where a fistula coexists the organisms cultured are gut-derived organisms whereas skin-derived organisms are more common in patients without fistula formation. Candida albicans, despite being an microorganism often found in the gastrointestinal tract, has not previously been reported...
